Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 1998, Sri Krishnadevaraya University Campus. Since then, we have strived hard to establish laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities as indicated below:
Plant Tissue Culture
Department having a well organized plant tissue culture facility to conduct routine teaching and research experiments. Besides, well controlled plant growth chamber and accessory facilities.
Animal Tissue Culture
A separate, running animal tissue culture facility houses a dedicated laminar air flow, CO2 incubator and shakers.
Microbiology and Fermentation facility
Department having a well-equipped microbiological facilities including a fermenter, shaker, autoclaves and other accessory instruments under regular use.
Protein Technology
Instruments such as HPLC, Ultrafiltration, Column Chromatography and gel electrophoresis are being used routinely for teaching and research purposes.
Recombinant DNA Technology
State of the art facilities exist to carry out experiments related to gene cloning and expression. The facilities include DNA manual sequencer, gel electrophoresis, PCR, gel documentation, SDS PAGE, 1E and 2DE module, blotting apparatus, hybridization ovens, water baths, Incubator Shakers, Centrifuges, Laminar Air Flow etc.
Bioinformatics
The Department has procured two Silicon Graphics workstations and a range of software tools for bioinformatics and structural biology. The Bioinformatics Lab Contains 12 High Speed Intel P4 HT 2.66 GHz Processor Computers with High speed broadband internet connectivity.
The Department Library procured recent titles for Rs. 12 Lakhs. The Library consists of 500 text books and reference books in the field of biotechnology accessible to Students, scholars and teaching faculty. Besides, some prominent scientific and popular science journals subscribed for the benefit of students.
The students are given information on various subjects through class room teaching and organizing guest lectures and industrial visits. Due emphasis is laid on one-to-one interaction with the students, with the aim to stimulate logical, coherent and systematic thinking. Seminars and discussions are also organized to build up self-confidence among students and also to encourage them to analyse the concepts and issues in a more open manner. Experiments are designed and conduced in the laboratories to aid a better understanding and clarity of concepts. The students are allowed to carry out a project in the field of interest, which provides an excellent opportunity to apply the knowledge gained by them to critical and new problems. Assignments, quiz, seminars, tutorials and National level test orientations are routinely held in the Department. This all means aim towards providing first-hand and latest information to the students perusing Biotechnology course
